Healthcare in Nigeria faces a crisis. Consequently, hospitals struggle as thousands of health workers leave for opportunities abroad.

In response, the federal government will recruit over 15,000 health workers for Federal Tertiary Institutions in 2025.

Furthermore, Deputy Director of Information, Alaba Balogun, said the ministry granted special waivers to fast-track hiring.
“This recruitment ensures health facilities remain safe, well-staffed, and capable of delivering quality care,” he explained.

Previously, a similar exercise in 2024 hired more than 20,000 health professionals across 58 federal institutions.
Talent Drain Continues
Moreover, data shows the UK licensed 15,421 Nigerian-trained nurses and midwives between 2017 and March 2025.
Meanwhile, resident doctors in Nigeria fell from 15,000 to fewer than 8,000 over the past decade.
Therefore, with the new recruitment drive, the government hopes to reduce hospital pressure and retain critical health talent.
