The Federal Government has dismissed claims by former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi, that the newly approved $1 billion modernisation of the Apapa and TinCan Island Ports in Lagos reflects a bias towards Lagos while neglecting other Nigerian ports.

In a statement released on Tuesday by Dr Bolaji Akinola, media aide to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, the government said Obi’s comments were incorrect and misleading.

FG Dismisses Peter Obi’s Claims On Lagos-Focused Port Development

Akinola emphasised that the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda promotes balanced and inclusive maritime development across all regions

Also, he stated that  Lagos ports require urgent modernisation due to their scale and age.

However, the Federal Government has also begun procurement and upgrade processes for other major ports, including Warri, Port Harcourt, Calabar, and Onne.

The Lagos ports modernisation is a necessary intervention, but it is by no means the only focus,” the statement read.
“Our actions clearly show a nationwide commitment to developing the marine and blue economy equitably and sustainably.”

Akinola listed several ongoing and planned deep seaport projects across the country

He also noted that the Onitsha River Port in Anambra State stands as a clear example of government efforts to decentralise port operations and expand inland maritime trade.

Akinola stressed that these projects reflect a strategic, nationwide maritime plan designed to improve logistics, boost trade, and create regional economic opportunities.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and equitable governance, adding that ongoing reforms would ensure all regions benefit from the blue economy agenda.

Meanwhile,Peter Obi had earlier criticised the Federal Government’s focus on Lagos ports.

He calls for greater investment in other strategic ports to decongest Lagos and boost regional trade.
