Teju Babyface Reveals Why He Initially Regretted Relocating To The U.S.

Speaking in a recent YouTube video, Teju explained that many people suffer from what he called the “grass is greener syndrome”

The issue with life is that we almost suffer from the ‘grass is greener on the other side syndrome.’ When we’re standing in one place and looking at another, that other place looks greener, rosier, and more appealing. But we don’t see the challenges from where we’re standing,” he said.

The comedian revealed that while he was confident about relocating with his family, the move became overwhelming when COVID-19 struck just a few months after their arrival.

When we were leaving Nigeria, I knew it was the necessary next step in my career and for my family. But when we got here and the challenges began, especially when COVID-19 started, I was convinced I had made the biggest mistake of my life,” he admitted.

Teju Babyface noted that adapting to the harsh realities of living in America was not easy.

Also, he describes the experience as “a ruinous risk” that left him feeling lost for years.

America has its unique challenges. Then, when you add COVID on top of that, ah! For about three years, I was sure I had shot myself in the foot,” he confessed.

Reflecting on the emotional toll, Teju said the period gave him a new understanding of a lyric by King Sunny Ade, which he had sung for years without grasping its depth.

For the first time, I understood what King Sunny Ade meant in one of his songs. That period truly made me reflect on life,” he added.
