Nigeria’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market has seen a welcome drop in prices, with cooking gas now selling for around ₦1,400 per kilogram across major cities, according to retailers and industry experts.

The decline follows months of steady increases that saw prices soar to ₦1,800/kg in some areas.

Cooking Gas Price Crashes To ₦1,400/kg Across Nigeria

Retailers in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt said the price drop began in early October.

This fuels improved local supply, a slightly stronger naira, and falling international LPG prices.

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) confirmed the trend, noting that increased local production and vessel discharges have helped stabilise the market.

Retail prices now range between ₦1,350 and ₦1,450 per kilogram, depending on the city,” said Tunde Adelakun, a member of NALPGAM.

This development brings relief to many Nigerians who have been struggling with high energy costs since the removal of fuel subsidies and the naira’s depreciation.

LPG, once promoted as a cleaner cooking option, had become too expensive for many families.

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that the average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder jumped from ₦9,000 in October 2023 to ₦16,000 by August 2025.

Experts say the recent price dip could ease household expenses if it remains stable.

Industry players credit the decline to improved supply from Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), which provides over 40% of local LPG, and to lower international prices.

Global LPG costs fell by about 10% in September due to reduced demand and higher output from major producers—bringing much-needed relief to Nigerian consumers.
