The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has entered a new era. Recently, OpenAI chose it to host Africa’s first AI academy.

OpenAI Academy Launches In Lagos

The university made the announcement during its 2025 International Week in Akoka, Lagos.

This year’s theme, “Equitable Partnerships and the Future of AI in Africa,” attracted academics, innovators, government officials, and industry leaders from around the world.

Together, they explored how cooperation can accelerate Africa’s technological growth.

Collaboration Drives Innovation

For Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Afolabi Lesi, the week offered more than discussions.

“We are here to move from intent to results that impact students, communities, and nations,” he explained.

“Technology must serve people and places, not the other way round.”

Moreover, UNILAG drives collaboration at every level.

Engineers work with linguists, and clinicians cooperate with social scientists, ensuring AI solutions address real human needs.

“Our partners choose us because we combine capability with contextual knowledge,” Lesi added.

Africa Leads AI

Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola encouraged African institutions to lead AI innovation rather than merely consume it.

“AI is already present.

It can transform education, healthcare, governance, and industry, but only through fair, co-created partnerships,” she stated.

She highlighted UNILAG’s projects, including health innovation challenges and medicinal plant research, proving Africa-led solutions work in real contexts.

The week reached its climax when OpenAI’s Africa lead, Emmanuel Lubanzadio, announced the OpenAI Academy at UNILAG.

“This Academy will nurture African talent and spread innovation across communities, not concentrate it,” he said.

The audience applauded enthusiastically.

Furthermore, government and private-sector leaders praised the university.

Dr Bosun Tijani highlighted Nigeria’s national fibre-optic initiative, which aims to connect all local governments.

Bank of America’s Yvonne Ike celebrated UNILAG graduates for competing confidently with peers globally, stressing that Africa’s greatest AI asset lies in its people.

In conclusion, with the OpenAI Academy, UNILAG is not just participating in the AI revolution — it is helping Africa lead it.
