Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signalling a major political realignment within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
The shocking announcement reportedly came through a formal letter submitted to the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, where Diri expressed gratitude to party members and leadership for their support throughout his political journey but stated that it was time to “pursue a new direction.”
Governor Douye Diri’s decision comes barely 24 hours after Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC)
This is a move that further deepened the growing cracks and internal conflicts within the opposition party.

Political observers have described Diri’s exit as a devastating blow to the PDP, especially in the South-South region where he has been one of the party’s strongest figures.
Also, Douye Diri departure is expected to influence other governors, lawmakers, and stakeholders who have expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s handling of internal disputes, leadership structure, and dwindling electoral strength.
Sources close to the Bayelsa Government House hint that Governor Douye Diri might be considering aligning with a new political platform ahead of the next general elections.
It is either by joining the APC or forming an alliance with another emerging coalition.
Party insiders say the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) has scheduled an emergency meeting to deliberate on the recent wave of defections and strategise ways to stabilise the party before further damage occurs.
