South Africa is intensifying its efforts to ease trade tensions with the United States.
On Tuesday, President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that he has entered talks with a senior U.S. trade official to explore ways to reduce tariffs that former President Donald Trump imposed.

He said, “We are now negotiating with the United States Trade Representative to determine how much we can reduce that,” signalling Pretoria’s determination to secure fairer access for South African goods in the U.S. market.

Moreover, Ramaphosa stressed the continuing importance of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which grants African nations preferential access to U.S. markets.
He argued that maintaining AGOA not only strengthens trade but also drives economic growth and creates jobs across South Africa.
As these discussions progress, they could mark a turning point in U.S.-South Africa economic relations, balancing immediate market access with long-term strategic interests.
