The United Kingdom has formally recognised Palestine as a state after Israel failed to meet conditions previously outlined by the Government, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced.
In a co-ordinated move with Canada and Australia, Starmer confirmed the decision on social media.
He stated that while the hope for a two-state solution was “fading… we cannot let that light go out.”
Earlier this year, the UK had warned that recognition would follow in September 2025 unless Israel agreed to specific conditions.
These included an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, a commitment to long-term peace, and the revival of a credible two-state solution.
However, the UK government said the situation has deteriorated further.
The escalation of violence, images of starvation, and civilian suffering were described as intolerable.
A recent UN inquiry also accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, coinciding with the launch of a new ground offensive in Gaza City earlier this week.
Speaking on September 21, Starmer declared: “Today, to revive the hope of peace for Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine.”
He continued: “In the face of the growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace. That means a secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state. At the moment, we have neither.”
The Prime Minister stressed that ordinary people, Israelis and Palestinians alike, deserve to live in peace, free from violence and suffering.

He also referenced the ongoing plight of hostages still held by Hamas, nearly two years after the October 7 attacks, highlighting recent distressing images of their emaciated condition.
