Afriland Properties has broken its silence on the fire that devastated Afriland Towers last Tuesday, claiming around ten lives.

In response to public concern, the management moved quickly to dispel “misinformation in public space” and explain what happened.
Cause And Response
The company stated that the fire began in the basement inverter room.
Although staff activated all safety protocols immediately, thick smoke and intense heat spread rapidly, forcing some occupants to leap from windows when escape routes became impassable.
Moreover, Afriland Towers features fire alarms, emergency staircases, multiple exits, smoke extractors, fire reels, and extinguishers—all certified by federal and state fire authorities.
The company emphasised that staff conduct fire drills regularly, with trained wardens stationed on each floor.

Nevertheless, the rapid spread of smoke limited the effectiveness of these measures during the incident.
Staff Safety And Future Measures
The management confirmed that they will not reopen the building until engineers complete a full structural, safety, and regulatory review.
Meanwhile, they provide staff with medical checks, counselling, and ongoing support to ensure well-being.
Looking ahead, Afriland Properties is actively reviewing the safety of all its facilities.
They are working with independent fire experts, regulators, and insurers to strengthen safety measures beyond regulatory standards and prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.
