The United States Mission in Nigeria has reiterated that visa application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, regardless of whether an application is approved or denied.
The statement was posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday.
The Mission addressed the growing concerns of Nigerians who have expressed frustration at losing large sums when their applications are unsuccessful.

“We hear your concerns regarding U.S. visa application fees. Like most countries, U.S. visa fees cover the cost of processing the application, regardless of the outcome. While fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, each application is reviewed thoroughly and fairly. For best results, prepare your application carefully and use the resources on our website,” the Mission explained.
The clarification comes amid increasing social media complaints.
Many applicants describes the process as financially burdensome, particularly in cases of repeated denials.
According to the Mission, the fees are primarily used to cover administrative costs associated with processing applications and should not be seen as a guarantee of visa approval.
The U.S. Mission further advised Nigerians planning to apply for visas to prepare diligently.
