United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has confirmed a fire outbreak at one of its branches on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

The incident sparked chaos as videos circulating on social media showed workers attempting to escape through windows, with some reportedly jumping from upper floors to safety.
In a statement, the pan-African lender clarified that the affected building is not the UBA House, Marina, which serves as the bank’s head office.
“Contrary to reports online and on social media, the affected building is not the UBA House, Marina, the Bank’s head office. We have ensured the safety and well-being of our staff and customers in the branch,” the bank said.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
However, the viral footage has raised public concern, with calls mounting for improved safety measures in commercial buildings across Lagos.
