Singer and songwriter, Seyi Shay, has spoken about the profound impact of her mentor, Sound Sultan’s death on her career.
In an interview the singer revealed that after the legendary artiste passed away in 2021, she lost the zeal to continue making music.

Seyi Shay explained that the tragedy coincided with her pregnancy, which further influenced her decision to take a break from the industry.
“During the filming of Nigerian Idol, my mentor, my best friend, my father figure, and the person who brought me into the Nigerian music industry, died. Sound Sultan passed away,” she recalled.
“What hurt the most is that I didn’t get to see him before he passed away. I was supposed to fly to New York that weekend during a filming break to see him.”
“He even asked me to bring him something specifically. It just tore me apart. I felt I didn’t have the will to continue music without Sound Sultan, my peace of mind, and my mental health. So, I decided to go on a little break.”
She added that pregnancy also played a role in her decision: “I told myself there’s no way I’m going to have my child in the toxic music industry and under the constant scrutiny I was facing. That’s why I chose to step back.”
