Nigerians will witness a rare astronomical event tonight as a total lunar eclipse, popularly referred to as a “blood moon,” becomes visible across the country.

Nigeria To Experience Total Lunar Eclipse

According to astronomical experts, the eclipse will begin around 8:00 p.m. West Africa Time and will last for approximately 83 minutes.

During this period, the Moon is expected to take on a reddish or coppery hue, caused by the Earth’s atmosphere filtering sunlight onto the lunar surface.

The phenomenon will be visible across the entire country and other parts of West and Central Africa, including Ghana, Cameroon, Benin, Togo, Niger, and Chad.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon.

Unlike solar eclipses, it is completely safe to observe without any protective eyewear.

Experts have described tonight’s event as one of the most significant celestial occurrences of the year, with over seven billion people across Africa, Europe, Asia, and parts of Australia expected to witness the eclipse.

Residents are advised to step outside shortly before 8:00 p.m. for the best view and to watch throughout the period of totality.

Photography enthusiasts are encouraged to use tripods or steady equipment to capture the Moon’s striking red appearance.
