Lagos’ busiest airport has entered a new phase of change as reconstruction begins at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA).

The project promises to transform its ageing terminal, but in the meantime, passengers must prepare for some disruption.
FAAN’s Advisory
On Friday, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) issued a travel advisory and urged travellers to adjust their routines.
FAAN asked passengers to leave earlier than usual, follow traffic directions to ease congestion, and park only in designated areas.
Furthermore, the agency stressed that only those flying should come to the airport, since space remains limited during the works.
Billion-Naira Investment
Meanwhile, the federal executive council took a bold step in August by approving aviation infrastructure contracts worth more than ₦900 billion.

As part of this decision, the government allocated ₦712.25 billion for MMIA’s terminal one, where engineers will strip the building down to its frame and rebuild all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo explained that the project will run for 22 months and deliver a modern, efficient hub for Nigeria’s commercial capital.
Consequently, FAAN has asked passengers to stay patient and plan ahead.
In the short term, travellers may face delays and tighter space.
In the long term, however, Nigeria expects to unveil a gateway that finally matches the ambition and energy of Lagos.
