Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the circumstances surrounding the death of Ruth Otabor, younger sister of Big Brother Naija star, Phyna.

In a statement released on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Sowore described the incident as a “preventable tragedy” caused by the “cutthroat and irresponsible corporate conduct” of Dangote Group truck drivers.
“A sad moment has struck. The reckless operations of Dangote truck drivers have cut a beautiful life short.”
“I commiserate deeply with Phyna and the entire Otabor family over this tragic loss of a brilliant graduate whose future was stolen,” Sowore stated.
He stressed that Ruth’s death was not inevitable but the result of systemic failures, including poor driver training, bad roads, and lack of timely medical response after accidents.
“This could have been avoided if drivers were properly trained, if Nigeria’s terrible roads were fixed, and if, after the accident, there had been timely and humane medical intervention. Instead, another family is grieving, another young life wasted, while powerful corporations and big men escape accountability,” Sowore added.
The activist further noted that Ruth’s death underscores the continued failure of the Nigerian state to protect its citizens, while corporate giants operate without consequences.
“May Ruth’s soul rest in power. And may her death strengthen the struggle for justice,” he concluded.
