The Federal Government has officially introduced a Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Framework.
They makes it compulsory for every teacher in both public and private schools across Nigeria to undergo ethics screening and criminal background checks before they can be employed.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the policy on Monday, August 25, in Abuja
He stated this during the unveiling of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital portal and its new strategic vision for the profession.
According to Alausa, the initiative is part of far-reaching reforms designed to restore dignity, professionalism, and accountability in Nigeria’s education sector.
Also, he emphasised that no teacher will henceforth be employed without clearance.
He stressed that even private school owners must verify TRCN registration and ethical clearance for all their teachers.
The framework will be fully integrated into the TRCN digital portal, offering real-time teacher registration, licensing, and monitoring.
Also, this will empower school owners, government agencies, and stakeholders to confirm teachers’ credentials and compliance with professional standards.

It will curb issues such as impersonation, forgery, and the hiring of unqualified personnel.
“This policy will safeguard the integrity of classrooms and ensure that only individuals of sound moral character and proven ethical conduct are entrusted with nurturing future generations,” Alausa affirmed.
