Renowned British actor Terence Stamp has passed away at the age of 87. The London-born star, best known for playing memorable villains such as General Zod in the early Superman films, died on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

News of his passing was announced in a notice published online, sparking tributes from colleagues, fans, and institutions including the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Stamp’s career spanned more than six decades. He made his film debut in 1962 with Billy Budd, a performance that earned him both an Academy Award nomination and a BAFTA nomination.
He later won acclaim for a wide range of roles, including his poignant portrayal of Bernadette, a transgender character, in 1994’s The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, which brought him another BAFTA nomination.
However, it was his role as the imposing General Zod in 1978’s Superman and its 1980 sequel Superman II that cemented his place in popular culture.
Stamp’s final feature film role came in Edgar Wright’s 2021 thriller Last Night in Soho. Wright paid tribute to the late actor on Instagram, describing him as “kind, funny, and endlessly fascinating.”
