Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have climbed to 8th place in the latest FIBA Women’s World Rankings, marking another milestone in their remarkable run of success.
In the updated standings released on Thursday, 14 August, 2025, Nigeria jumped three spots from 11th to 8th, amassing 640.1 ranking points. They remain the only African team to ever break into the global top 10.

The United States continues to lead the rankings with 880.9 points, followed by Australia (719.6), France (719.2), China (712.7), and Belgium (702.1). Spain and Canada sit in 6th and 7th respectively, with Nigeria now rounding out the top eight.
The ranking boost follows D’Tigress’ record-breaking victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, where they claimed an unprecedented fifth consecutive title.
The reigning champions defeated Senegal 78–64 in the final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville.
This win secured their seventh AfroBasket crown overall and extended their unbeaten streak in the competition to 29 games, a run that stretches back to 2015.
Elsewhere in the rankings, Lithuania surged 14 places to 31st after reaching the quarter-finals of the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket for the first time in a decade.
South Sudan made headlines with a historic third-place finish in their AfroBasket Women debut.
Lebanon climbed 13 places to 41st, Indonesia jumped 19 places to 60th after the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup, Iran rose 15 spots to 44th, and Mongolia leapt 20 places to 70th following their Division B performance in the same tournament.
