The United States government has warned that using a tourist visa with the intention of giving birth in the country is not allowed and could lead to a visa denial.

The warning, aimed at curbing what is known as birth tourism, was issued via the official social media channels of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria on Monday, July 28, 2025.
“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted,” the statement read.
It added that “Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent.”
The U.S. Department of State noted that consular officers are directed to reject visa applications when there is credible evidence that the applicant’s main reason for travelling is to deliver a baby in the U.S.
The embassy also stressed that all visa applicants must be honest about their travel intentions. Misrepresenting the purpose of a trip, the statement warned, could have long-term immigration consequences.
