As Nigerians prepare to go to the polls to carry out their civil right of electing their leaders  at the forthcoming 2023 general elections, Christians have been charged to actively participate and not be by-standers.

The guest speaker at a one day conference, held in Lagos on Friday, Bishop Samson Osundina from the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Ikorodu Diocese, spoke on the theme: “Good Governance And Better Government,” appealed to Christians.

Osundina, laid emphasis on the need for Christians to be active in politics and take part in electing leaders instead of sitting back and tagging politics as an evil enterprise.

Elucidating on the challenges of good governance and better government in Nigeria, he said “electoral cheating, disrespect of the rule of law, corruption, lack of transparency and accountability, attack on freedom of the press, violence and human abuse at the center of the problem.”

Furthermore, the Cleric fingered “foreign donor agencies and investors who in their selfish effort to protect their interests, are regularly forcing African governments to adopt economic policies that are not helping the already weak economies.”

He believes that fasting and prayers are good but they are not enough to bring Nigeria as a country out of bad governance and install a good government.

Another cleric, Prof, Morayo Ajisafe, enjoined men of God and husbands to stop discouraging their members and wives from going into politics, she said “it is our duty to support and encourage Christians when they show interest in politics.”

The convener, Dr Francis Shopekan, in his address said the goal of the conference is to awaken Christians and Christian leaders to their civic responsibility.
