the INEC  announced   Friday, 17th June 2022, as the deadline for political parties to submit the names of presidential candidates and their running mates.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman, stated this on the commission’s social media accounts that the  list of all Presidential and Governorship candidates must be accompanied by the names of their running mates (i.e. Vice Presidential and Deputy Governorship candidates) and all nominations must be uploaded to the portal on/or before the deadlines. The portal will automatically shut down on Friday 17th June 2022 for national elections and on Friday 15th July 2022 for State elections.

While the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer Atiku Abubakar is expected to name a running mate from the southern regions of the country, his rival in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu is expected to pick a northerner as his vice-presidential candidate.

Given that Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, came from Nigeria’s southern region, analysts predict his running mate will come from the country’s northern region.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party(NNPP) Presidential candidate  Kwankwaso has yet to name his running mate. The former governor of Kano State is rumored to be considering choosing the party’s vice presidential candidate from the south of the country.
